'Conversation too long' in ChatGPT and Claude: why it happens and how to fix it

You are mid-project and ChatGPT says the conversation is too long, or Claude says you have reached the length limit. Your chat is not broken. It is full. Here is what is going on and how to carry on without starting from zero.

Why you see this message

Every reply is written from the whole conversation so far. A model can only take in a fixed amount of text at once, called the context window. When your chat fills it, there is no room for new messages, so the app tells you to start a new chat. You may see wording such as "the conversation is too long, please start a new one" or "you have reached the maximum length for this conversation".

How to fix it

  1. Start a new chat. The old one stays in your history.
  2. Carry the work over. If the old chat still lets you type, send the handoff prompt to get a short structured summary, then paste it into the new chat. If the old chat refuses messages, rebuild the summary yourself from the goal, decisions, constraints and next steps.
  3. Do not paste the whole transcript. It drags dead ends into the new chat and fills its window again.
  4. Keep big pastes out of the chat when you can. A single large paste can use more of the window than dozens of short messages.

Stop it happening again

The message appears only after the chat is full, and answers usually get worse well before that. The fix is to see the fill level while you work and switch at about 50 to 70 percent. ContextMeter shows a live meter on ChatGPT and Claude and can do the handoff in one click. See how it works, or when to start a new chat for the warning signs. Gemini support is coming soon.

If the chat is also slow

A very long chat makes the page heavy, which can make typing laggy. A fresh chat fixes that. ContextMeter's Free memory button reloads the tab to release the long chat while keeping your count.

Frequently asked questions

Why does ChatGPT say the conversation is too long?

The chat has filled its context window, the amount of text the model can take in at once. Because the whole conversation is resent with every message, a very long thread eventually cannot accept more, and ChatGPT asks you to start a new chat.

How do I fix 'conversation too long' in ChatGPT or Claude?

Start a new chat. Your old chat is not deleted; you just cannot add more to it. Carry the important parts over by asking for a short structured summary first, then paste it into the new chat.

Will I lose my chat if I start a new one?

No. The old conversation stays in your history. What you lose is the model's memory of it, which is why you carry a summary across.

Does a paid plan remove the limit?

No. Paid plans give a larger context window, but every plan has a limit, and answers can get worse well before you hit it.

Why is a long ChatGPT chat slow?

A very long chat makes the page heavy for your browser, and the model has more text to process. Starting a fresh chat usually fixes both. ContextMeter's Free memory button also releases the long chat from your browser while keeping your count.
