Claude context meter: see how full your Claude chat is
A Claude context meter shows how much of Claude's context window your chat has used, so you know when a long conversation needs a fresh start. ContextMeter is a free Chrome extension for Claude.ai.
What is a Claude context meter?
It is a gauge on Claude.ai that shows what share of the context window your chat is using. Watching it helps you start a new chat before answers slip.
How to use it
- Install ContextMeter from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open a chat on Claude.ai. A percent badge appears in the corner.
- Click it for tokens used, room left and the biggest messages.
- When the chat is nearly full, use Handoff to start a new chat with a summary.
ContextMeter is a free Chrome extension (Edge and Firefox to follow) in US English, priced at $0. It runs only in your browser, and your chat text never leaves your computer. Add it to Chrome.
Why people use a context meter
A long ChatGPT or Claude chat gets worse before it hits a hard limit: it forgets early instructions, repeats mistakes and drifts off the task. A meter shows how full the chat is, so you can switch to a new chat at about 50 to 70 percent with a summary, rather than guessing.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free Claude context meter?
Yes. ContextMeter is a free Chrome extension that shows a live percent-used meter on Claude.ai, with no paid tier and no account.
Does Claude show how full my chat is?
Not in the chat itself. Claude summarizes older parts of long chats in the background, but it does not show a meter. Claude Code has its own /context command for developers.
Is the Claude meter exact?
It is an estimate from the visible messages. Anthropic does not publish a browser tokenizer, so the meter labels its Claude numbers as estimates.
Can I use a Claude context meter in the US?
Yes. ContextMeter is in US English, priced at $0, and works for anyone in the United States using Claude.ai in Chrome.
Does ContextMeter send my Claude chats anywhere?
No. It reads the messages on screen in your browser, has no server, and stores no message text.
